David Bowie's Art Collection Is Worth Serious Bank
Sales of David Bowie's art collection, on display at Sotheby's London, went for a total of nearly $41.5 million dollars and drew record crowds, AFP reported.
The collection of 130 modern and contemporary British pieces drew 1,750 bids.
"David Bowie's personal art collection captured the imagination of the tens of thousands who visited our exhibitions and the thousands who took part in the sales," Oliver Barker, chairman of Sotheby's Europe, said.
A graffiti-inspired work called "Air Power" by Basquiat fetched $8.8 million, twice the maximum price that was expected.
More than half the artists in the sale set record prices, Sotheby's said.
A painting entitled "Head of Gerda Boehm" went for a record $4.8 million. Bowie once said of the piece, "My God, yeah! I want to sound like that looks."
